Setback for democracy in Europe
By refusing a motion by the Christian Social People’s Party of Luxembourg (CSV), the governing majority of liberals, socialist and greens voted against the principle of the “Spitzenkandidaten” for the election of the President of the European Commission.
For the CSV Group, this represents a clear setback for democracy in Europe, as well as a return to the times when European top positions were decided in political backrooms.
After the recent statements concerning the “Spitzenkandidaten” question made by Luxembourg Foreign Minister Jean Asselborn, the majority vote is also a disavowal of his person.
A Citizens’ Europe looks different. And so does strong support for the European idea.

Rückschritt für die Demokratie in Europa
Die Regierungsmehrheit von Blau-Rot-Grün hat sich heute mit ihrem Votum gegen eine entsprechende CSV-Motion vom Prinzip des Spitzenkandidaten für die Wahl des Präsidenten der Europäischen Kommission verabschiedet.
Für die CSV-Fraktion bedeutet dies ein klarer Rückschritt für die Demokratie in Europa sowie eine Rückkehr zu den Zeiten der Bestimmung von europäischen Spitzenämtern in politischen Hinterzimmern.
Nach den jüngsten Aussagen von Außenminister Jean Asselborn in Sachen Spitzenkandidat ist das Mehrheitsvotum darüber hinaus eine Desavouierung seiner Person.
Ein Europa der Bürger sieht anders aus. Rückenwind für die europäische Idee auch.
