Our values and positions

The CSV – A Values-Based Party for a Fair Society

We are the major Luxembourgish people’s party of the social middle.

Every Individual Counts …

Our policy is based on the fundamental principles of Christian social teaching. It is based on the guiding principle of "Every individual counts".

… as an Individual

Thus, the appreciation of human dignity is at the center of our efforts. Every person should have the opportunity to build their own existence. Above all, everyone has the right to realize themselves in life.

However, an individual can only truly develop within a community. We can achieve our goals best together. When we help and support each other. We firmly stand by the community of solidarity.

… as an Active and Valuable Member of Society

We believe that everyone should and can contribute to our communal life. Naturally, the stronger shoulders more than the weaker ones. Social cohesion, security, and common prosperity, as well as the most modern public infrastructures and services, require efforts from all of us. Our community and free society cannot exist in the long term without the contributions of every person, without everyone’s involvement.

However, communal life should offer more opportunities and freedoms to everyone, not suppress and limit the individual. Therefore, it is primarily not the state but each of us who is responsible for our well-being and that of our fellow human beings.

We stand for the interaction of initiative and collective efforts, of performance thinking and social justice, and for the union of individual freedom and responsibility for the greater good.

The CSV – A People's Party Close to the Citizens

We do not only represent the interests of a particular population group. Balancing the different needs and the common good are crucial in our policy.

Today, however, the CSV is above all the only party in Luxembourg that is represented throughout the country. In the municipal elections, it was the only party that presented a complete list in all proportional municipalities. With over 80 sections, it is firmly anchored across the country in Luxembourg society.

With the Support of 10,000 Members

Political decisions do not arise by themselves. Solutions do not fall from the sky. Politics is made by people. The decisions are made by people.

The CSV – that’s over 10,000 people, men and women of all ages and social classes, people with various professions and from many nationalities who are willing to get involved. It’s 10,000 people who are ready to contribute their knowledge, skills, and ideas. 10,000 people who are committed to society and their fellow humans. Locally, regionally, and nationally. But also in Europe and beyond.

With the Trust of the Citizens

In the last legislative elections, Luxembourgers gave the CSV over 34 percent. The CSV is the party that the citizens trust by far the most. For this trust, we can only say thank you. For Christian social politicians, however, this means concretely: Gaining people’s trust is a mandate – not a privilege. Shaping politics is not an end in itself, but a service to fellow human beings.

The CSV – A Program Party with Clear Positions

Politics is a competition of ideas. The differences between the parties are not limited to the personality of the top candidate. Elections represent a choice for the citizens between different views of humanity and societal models, between alternative priorities and proposed solutions.

Developing Positions – Implementing Solutions

Being in political responsibility means, for the CSV, implementing Christian-social values into reality. It means developing future concepts for the country, thinking of tomorrow today. It means presenting clear proposals on how the quality of life of people can be improved and finding concrete solutions for concrete problems.

Within the Party

Our positions arise in internal democracy and discussion, in collaboration of simple party members, mandate holders, and experts. They are developed in the various party organs, discussed in working groups, and debated at congresses and national councils. Every five years, these considerations find their expression in the party's election program.

It is part of the CSV's self-understanding to question itself without blindly following every trend. It matters to periodically question the implementation of principles and to regularly reconsider the policy carried out on the ground. Are we still fulfilling our task? Do we still have the right answers to the new challenges? Does our policy still correspond to our values and ideals?

In Dialogue with the Citizens

We welcome public debate. Organizations from civil society always find open doors with us if they are interested in an exchange of opinions. Comments, questions, and ideas from the citizens are always taken seriously by us. Not only our mandate holders and our sections at the local level seek contact with the citizens, as a national party we regularly invite, for example, to discuss with people in the country about our priorities for Luxembourg and our positions, to discuss their concerns and their suggestions.
